Just a quick one – one picture of a Burger King in Wellington.
This is actually a pretty good representation of Wellington – and New Zealand – buildings in general. The old Bank of New Zealand building was bought out by Burger King because, well, it was a really good location for a Burger King, at the corner of Cuba and Manners Malls. (Really good foot traffic).
Though obviously, it was built inside a very, very ornate Bank of New Zealand building – a complete contradiction in style and substance. It’s just that New Zealanders, for whatever reason, tend to re-use old buildings to new uses; this often means that NZ architecture is old, drafty, cramped for space, and a bit of a mishmash of styles.
On the other hand, there’s something to be said about finding new uses for perfectly serviceable buildings – a possible side-effect of living on an island in the middle of nowhere.
I thought it was interesting enough to show you, anyway.
